A Midwinter's Night Dream
Sallie and Luc Durette of Secret Garden Kaleidoscopes present to you their first in a series of three holiday kaleidoscopes celebrating World Peace and the many beautiful cultural celebrations of Faith that occur worldwide every day. The artwork on the exterior of this series was conceived by Sallie, and commissioned to internationally acclaimed artist, Marie-Helene Grabman. Marie practices The art of "Scherenschnitte." Scherenschnitte, or scissor cuttings, is not very well known in this country. The art tradition was founded in Switzerland and Germany in the 1500's. It was brought to Colonial America in the 1700's by immigrants who settled primarily in Pennsylvania. Marie’s artwork was then recreated in wood by laser cutting. The kaleidoscope body is crafted in figured Western Maple. All trees are from our Western Washington area and are processed in a natural and eco-friendly manner. The interior images feature a carefully selected gathering of real pine cones, cypress and leaves that are gold plated, Some of these elements are then hand-painted by Luc in the studio. Czechoslovakian glass pearls and jewels suggest berries and other offerings of the forest. A winter’s glow is cast on the scene by crystalline glazed ceramic in cool frosty colors.
